Why does wedding photography cost so much?

It is not a surprise that when it comes to your wedding day the costs can add up really quick. Cake, Dress, Venue, Flowers, the list goes on. Photography is also one of the major things that shows up on that list and often, it comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

I am here to talk about what goes into your wedding photos and why it is worth the price tag that comes with it. I can hear it now “You’re kind of biased in this situation, don’t you think? You’re absolutely right, I very much am, but still grab some popcorn and hear me out.

When it comes to your wedding a lot of people believe we show up for one day, maybe two at the most if your wedding was a destination wedding and then our work is done. This is the furthest thing from the truth. From the day you book your wedding with me I go into planning mode. I talk to you and set a handful of meetings in the months leading up to your wedding day. During this time I am working closely with you to find out what style of photos you like as well as every last detail about your day. All of this is preparation before your wedding day has even arrived!

Fast forward several months to your wedding day, I show up with my team when the bride starts to get ready and we are there all day until the party starts coming to an end, to bring you, the bride and groom an amazing story of your day. After a full day of photographing you, your family, the dress, rings, flowers and a million other tiny details that you spent hours detailing to be just right, just the way you imagined them to be. From here, many people think we can go home and sleep. But once again, they’d be wrong. The team heads home and once back at the office we start backing up all of your photos, one memory card at a time. From here the real work starts.

“These photos will be cherished keepsakes that you will be able to pass down for generations…”

There is so much more that goes into your photos than just taking the photo. Really my job breaks down to 10% taking photos, 40% running the business side of things and 50% editing your photos so they are perfect. On average, for the next 2 weeks after your wedding day I and my team are doing nothing but editing your photos. For hours at a time, I am in front of my computer going through hundreds of photos making sure every last detail is right, making sure they are just the way that I envisioned them to be. Sound Familiar?

The job is much more than pushing a button and having a pretty picture as the end result. Just like everyone reading this photographers also have bills to pay, family to feed, a car to maintain, etc…every day real life expenses, on top of those things that are business expenses. Those are things that just can’t be accomplished if we all charged $300 a wedding. Our prices not only reflect a level of quality and service that you receive when working with our company, but they also reflect all of the time spent working with you in the months leading up to your wedding, the countless amount of hours spent editing your photos and any products that you may have ordered or that may have come with your package.

Think about it, eventually, your cake will be gone, your dress will get cleaned and then put away in a box. The music will fade, the flowers will wilt (unless you press them! Which is a blog for another day). The photos, however will last you generations. They will be the thing that you pull out 5, 10, 50 years from now and will exist and allow you to relive every detail from your wedding day. These photos will be cherished keepsakes that you will be able to pass down for generations of your family. Someday, when you look at them down the road, you’ll be able to pinpoint exactly how you felt at the moment when that photo was taken. All in all, when it comes to documenting your wedding day hire professional and you will be happy you did.
